Music has been an important part of Tom's life since he was a young teen. His first album was given to him by his mother for his birthday. The album was selected not by the actual music, but by the cover. His mother knew of his interest in science fiction, so she selected Boston's Don't Look Back because it displayed an apparent spaceship flying over a crystalline surface of an alien world. Yes, Tom liked the cover. As he started listening to the album, he realized he really loved the music. After that he bought Boston's first album, loving that even more. He later discovered the band Styx, which he loved just as much as Boston. To this day, these are his two favorite bands.

He went on to find other bands he liked such as Journey, Pink Floyd, Foreigner, ELO, Heart, the Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Cars, Rush, and single artists such Billy Joel, Bob Seger and John Cougar Mellencamp. As he grew older, he found his tastes expanded to include such artists as Air Supply, Van Halen, The Beatles, Whitney Houston, Flim & the BBs, to name a few. In general, different varieties of rock from the 60s, 70's and 80's became his favorite. Sadly, the 90s didn't seem to offer anything new that he liked, and he stopped looking for new music.

As the 10s rolled around, his son Shawn, who took up playing the guitar, and grew up listening to his dad's music, started introducing him to some newer talented bands. Tom found that he also liked some of these, such as Avenged Sevengold, Shinedown, Bullet for my Valentine and Breaking Benjamin. Also, playing the Rock Band video game with Shawn exposed Tom to more newer music that he liked.

A friend of his, Bart Huff, played bass guitar and the two of them played around with writing and recording songs using a 4 track recorder. Tom wrote the lyrics, Bart wrote and played the music. Bart also wrote both music and lyrics to a couple of the songs as well. They called themselves Azimuth. You can check out one of the songs, Stalker in the Night, by clicking here.(Personal use only!) Bart later joined a real band called Always April, who recorded an album called Kid Gloves. Tom definitely added them to his group of favorite artists.
